Graz

With almost 300,000 inhabitants, Graz is the second largest city in Austria and thus has a larger population than the entire federal state of Burgenland. But the capital of Styria is also a cultural, artistic and educational center whose charisma radiates far beyond the borders of the Alpine Republic. Tradition and modernity meet in Graz like in hardly any other central European metropolis.

A walk in the completely preserved old town feels like a journey back in time to the 19th century, climbing the famous double spiral staircase in Graz Castle gives you the impression of being in the late Middle Ages. Just a few minutes’ walk away, the sight of the futuristic architecture of the Kunsthaus or the Murinsel puts you in the postmodern era. In contrast, from the Schloßberg you have a fantastic view of the metropolitan region of Graz and, looking in all four directions, you can see how big the city actually is. In the university district, on the other hand, you can immerse yourself in party life and make friends from all over the world.
But all these different impressions harmonize and flow into each other, so that one always has the impression that everything fits together.
This is exactly what makes Graz so magical.

The historic old town, together with Eggenberg Palace, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2010, was European Capital of Culture in 2003 and a city of the Reformation since 2015. These facts alone say enough about the importance of Graz for Styria, Austria and Europe. 1.75 million tourist overnight stays alone in 2022 bear witness to this.

Top 10 sights in Graz

  • Graz Schloßberg with Clock Tower – right in the center you will find THE landmark of Graz: the 28 meter high clock tower with its gold-plated hands – where, curiously enough, the hour hand is larger than the minute hand!
  • Burg Graz with double spiral staircase – the venerable castle from the 15th century rises proud and mighty in the east of the old town. Since the castle was expanded again and again, numerous architectural styles are harmoniously combined.
  • Hauptplatz – the heart of the city of Graz beats on the busy main square with its proud town hall. There is always something going on here – hustle and bustle, cultural events of all kinds, as a dating hotspot for the people of Graz or the loving design at Christmas time make the main square always pulsate.
  • Murinsel – a modern highlight of Styria is the artificially created Murinsel west of the old town. This gem, designed by New York architect Vito Accomin, was opened to mark the year 2003, when Graz was the European Capital of Culture.
  • Kunsthaus Graz – very close to the Murinsel you will find another cultural hotspot: the Kunsthaus. This was also opened in 2003 and has blossomed into a modern landmark of Graz. Here you will find many changing exhibitions and presentations of contemporary art projects.
  • Graz Cathedral with Mausoleum – after a trip to the modern age, another highlight of Graz is a classic one: the Graz Mausoleum is one of the most magnificent buildings in Austria!
  • Armoury – Graz can boast of having the largest historical weapons collection in the world in the premises of the former central weapons depot. In the five-storey Landesarsenal on Herrengasse, not far from the main square, its 32,000 exhibits from the 15th to the 19th centuries attract visitors from all over the world.
  • Glockenspiel – a delightful hotspot of a different kind is the glockenspiel on the square of the same name between the cathedral and the main square. Since the beginning of the 20th century, a girl and a boy in traditional costume have appeared in the gable of the carillon three times a day and danced to different melodies of the 24 bells.
  • Eggenberg Palace – another important sight of the city of Graz is about 4 km west of the historic city center: the baroque Eggenberg Palace, which has 4 towers (seasons), 12 gates (months) and 365 windows (days) according to the calendar.
  • Graz nightlife – no one can really know Graz who has not even immersed themselves in the city’s nightlife. With the second most bars and clubs in Austria, the city is also a magnet for the surrounding area and dance lovers from nearby Slovenia are also drawn to the city for a night out.
